As I sit here listening to Heart to Heart's self titled debut LP, on the eve of the album's two year anniversary, I can't help but let the flood of memories fill my mind with all the trials, tribulations, happiness, and promise that encapsulate this album and this band.
I find myself wanting to replay certain tracks over and over just to stay in the moment so that I can form a thought, but as the next song begins to play I am instantly transported to a new place and a different memory. Nick Zoppo, vocalist and wild man for HTH, and I first met when we both played in local “metalcore” bands in our respective central California home towns. Fast forward many years, and by accident (or fate, your choice), I came across Heart to Heart. I didn’t know it was the same guy at first, and I know he didn’t either, but his voice and the instrumentation resonated so perfectly together despite the band’s rough and young beginning. I knew I had to work with them. I knew that this band was something that was going to develop over time and grow in to something truly special.
We soon set out to release what would become 'DEATHPROOF' which was released in October of 2011, and what would also be the start of multiple long lasting friendships. A young band, a young label, and a young producer by the name of Kyle Black would all enter the picture together and create what Heart to Heart truly was and IS today.
Another year in the making, and a lot of “business talk”, and a lot of planning later; Heart to Heart entered the studio with Kyle Black in Glendale, CA to track and write for Self Titled. SO much happened during this time that it would take a novel to write everything we all went through vs. the blog post I have, but what I can say that happened…was magic. Nick Zoppo didn’t have much of a cheat sheet worth of lyrics to go off of, but rather a blank notebook and whole ton of heart. John Hayes (guitar), Taylor Stillwell (guitar), and Justin Bratcher (bass), all had the basics of the songs they were going to write…Stuart Stock (drums) knew exactly what he was doing….and Kyle Black had…well he had a whole lot of patience! What was scheduled for one month of recording turned in to three (3) months of recording. We missed the entire summer, but at the same time we didn’t miss anything at all. Every track came out perfect and as everyone intended. A story of what all of the members of Heart to Heart were going through or had gone through at the time. Heartbreak, Love, Hate, Abuse, Sexual Abuse, Divorce, Drug Addiction, Anger, Truth, Lies, Death, Life, Sexuality, Sickness, Health…..at the end of it all, it came out HEART to HEART. Eleven songs of pure honestly, struggle, and no regrets.
I am very humbled to have been able to release this record for this band and these guys, and I am truly grateful to be able to call them my friends. Happy Anniversary to Nick, John, Taylor, Justin, Stuart, and Kyle!
